Exterior cladding of architectural residential home in natural bush setting

Rattray Building Group takes a Tasmanian approach. We build for where we live. Working with local architects and designers, we construct new homes and renovations centered around what it means to live, work, and relax here in Tasmania.

Our work prioritises good design, without ignoring any of the other important stuff. We consider lifestyle, energy efficiency, sunlight, rainfall, geography, bushfire risks, views, accessibility and ongoing maintenance. The things that make homes both comfortable and beautiful.

Transparency and collaboration is key. We know the cost of building and how long things take. We know which materials will last, how easy they are to source, and the labour associated with working with them. The important thing is, we don’t keep secrets or cut corners. By keeping you in the loop and working through decisions together we can ensure you will continue to love your home or new space for decades to come.

We're into practical, thoughtful, high quality building work.

Rattray Building Group was founded by Liam Rattray. Liam grew up on the shores of Tasmania’s East Coast and spent many years as a commercial fisherman diving for Abalone and pulling cray pots everywhere from Flinders Island to the far south. He loves it here and has explored just about every inch of the state by land and sea.

Liam has always been creative, inquisitive and driven. Between trips to sea he would work alongside builders, fabricators, designers and craftsmen to learn new skills and trade knowledge. The culmination of these skills saw him independently design and build his first home overlooking the D'entrecasteaux Channel in Kettering, Southern Tasmania. This project confirmed his love for detailed building work and eventually saw him officially trade in the dive belt for a tool belt.

Despite his wealth of construction experience and several offers of work, Liam still opted to complete a formal carpentry apprenticeship after stepping away from fishing. Not far into his apprenticeship he was trusted with the responsibility of running large scale residential construction projects, and he hasn’t looked back since. In the years to come he would cut his teeth managing complex renovation projects in Sandy Bay and Battery Point, forging strong ongoing relationships with clients, architects, planners, engineers and tradespeople that continue to work closely with Rattray Building Group.

Now at the helm of RBG, Liam continues to take on ambitious new challenges and share knowledge with the people around him. He’s excited about what’s next and gets so much joy from his work.
